Transport
REWDT operates a Car Club, a Dial-a-ride service and e-bikes for residents to trial/hire.
Drop into our new offices close to the ferry terminal, email transport@rewdt.org, or give us a call on 01856 821229.
REWDT operates a Car Club where residents can hire an Electric Car for as little as 1 hour. We also have a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle. Membership is open to island residents.
The Electric Car is based at the Pier Building, where the charging point is located.
To apply to become a Car Club member, you can either fill in the form which can be download here and email it to us at transport@rewdt.org or send it to us at:
REWDT, The Pier Cabin, Rousay, Orkney KW17 2PU
Please read the instructions on the form, as there is additional information to supply before a membership can be processed. If you need any help, please get in touch with the office. Please allow up to one week for the REWDT office to process your Car Club membership application.
Once you become a member, someone from the team will need to show you around the car, familiarise you with the vehicle and the procedures to follow. This will include how to access the key box (and code), charge it, start and run the vehicle, and any other relevant details.
You can book on the website where you can see, at a glance, if the car is free when you would like to use it. We can show you how online booking works, too, if you need help.
We use a 7 seater (plus driver) electric Vauxhall Vivaro for community transport – both on and off Rousay. We now also have a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (4 passengers + wheelchair), a Peugeot Rifter Allure.
Our free** Community Transport Service is available to residents experiencing transport barriers within the community. We run a trip to Kirkwall on the first and third Thursdays of each month and whenever a month contains five Thursdays, we add an extra trip. **Please note that passengers are asked to pay their own foot passenger ferry fare.
We also run regular trips to Marion’s Shop on the island, usually twice a month. To check dates or book a place, email transport@rewdt.org or phone the office on 01865 821229. Please give at least 3 working days notice of any bookings or cancellations.
We also welcome drivers to help deliver our Community Transport Services. Please get in touch with us at transport@rewdt.org if you would like more information.
Either the Vauxhall Vivaro (7 seater + driver)or the Peugeot Rifter Allure Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle may be hired out, free of charge, by groups of residents or island community groups.
Anyone wishing to drive will need to join the REWDT Car Club, if not already a member (see above). The driver will also require a vehicle induction if they have not driven the hire vehicle before. To make an enquiry please email transport@rewdt.org or phone the office on 01865 821229.

We have electric bikes for residents to hire for a 3 month duration and sometimes longer, depending on demand. The bikes offer a great alternative to getting around the island! Please get in touch with transport@rewdt.org or phone the office on 01865 821229 to arrange an induction and a follow on e-bike hire.
Tourists and visitors can hire push bikes and e-bikes from Trumland Farm.
