Allotment Association

Our Allotments and Community Gardens were created in 2011, to help reduce our carbon footprint by reducing food miles and encouraging local growing. This project was made possible by funding from the Climate Challenge Fund.

The Community Garden is on the grounds of Rousay Primary School and has raised beds (for accessibility), a poly-tunnel and decking areas and a bird hide. This Garden is used as a community facility and outdoor learning environment for children and adults alike. The local schoolchildren make good use of this garden to grow vegetables and flowers, which they can harvest in the late summer.

The community allotment site is located adjacent to the social houses on Johnstons Road. It offers 8 external allotment plots and 12 indoor poly-tunnel plots which are available for members of the scheme. The placement of the allotment site enables access to those living in social housing at the Pier to a bigger garden / growing plot.

Association membership fees are £5.00 (for Allotment plot holder rules, click here). This enables you to apply to rent an allotment or polytunnel plot for the year and hire the various gardening equipment held at the site.

To register an interest in renting either an outside allotment plot (at £20 p/year, incl. the use of a shed) and/or a polytunnel plot (at £10 p/year), please get in contact.

Equipment hire available:

  • Small rotavator: £10 p/day, plus fuel
